Cleaning Your Tongue

Clean Tongue | Collegeville Dentistry

Everyone knows the importance of brushing their teeth twice and day and floss. However, did you know that your tongue is a big time target for bacteria? Although your tongue won’t get damaged directly, like your teeth do in the form of cavities, not cleaning your tongue can lead to some pretty negative results. Almost 50% of the bacteria in your mouth can be found on your tongue! This bacteria can be transferred onto your teeth which will lead more plaque, cavities, erosion, or oral diseases. Also about 90% of bad breath can be contributed an uncleaned tongue.

You can clean your tongue using any of the following methods:

  • Use a Tongue Scraper- This is the best and most effective way to clean your tongue of bacteria. It is made of plastic or medal and is made specifically for scraping off the bacteria on your tongue. You should start at the back of your tongue and work your way forward before bed and when you wake up in the morning. These devices can be found for cheap at most drug stores.
  • Use a Tongue Brush- Similar to a scraper, a tongue brush is made specifically to clean your tongue but is made of firm plastic bristles.
  • Tooth Brush- Toothbrushes aren’t as effective as designated scrapers or brushes since they are made for hard teeth not a soft tongue. It does not fully scrape off the layer of mucus and the bacteria underneath, which means you may still experience bad breath. Mouth wash does not fully eliminate the bacteria on your tongue either.
